WESTFIELD – Senior pitcher Emily Mailloux (Turners Falls/Erving, Mass.) tossed a 2-hitter for Westfield State in the second game of a twin bill with WPI, but the Engineers swept the doubleheader by scores of 14-4 and 1-0.
In the opener, WPI struck for three runs in the first and four runs in the second. Much of the damage was self-inflicted for the Owls, who made six of their eight errors in the game in those two frames.
Ama Biney (Holy Name/Worcester, Mass.) finished 2-2 with a triple and 3 rbi for the Engineers and RiAnna May (Standley Lake/ Westminster, Colo.) added a pair of hits and scored twice. Caroline Medino (Pompton Lakes, N.J.) (2-1) threw five innings to earn the win for WPI.
Seven different Owls hitters had base hits in the game. Emilie Manna (Reading/Reading, Mass.) came off the bench with a single and a pair of runs scored to lead the Owls offensively. Cat McCarthy (Ludlow/Ludlow, Mass.) (0-2) took the pitching loss for Westfield.
In the second game. WPI scored the game’s lone run in the sixth inning after Nina Murphy-Cook (Granite Bay/Roseville, CA) reached on a 1-out but single, stole second base, advanced to third on a wild pitch, then scored on a ground out by Biney.
Claire Doolin (Newton North/Newton, Mass.) (11-2) made the lone run stand up, shutting out the Owls on four hits while fanning seven to pick up her 11th win of the season.
Emma Dunbar (Notre Dame/Weymouth, Mass.) and Kat Robinson (East Hampton/East Hampton, Conn.) each had two hits for Westfield. Mailloux (3-5) took the tough-luck loss, allowing two hits and two walks while striking out four.
WPI improves to 21-5 with the wins. Westfield falls to 6-12 on the season.
