Murphy, Owls finish off WNEU

WSU baseballWESTFIELD – Westfield State’s Kyle Murphy (Westfield/Westfield MA) was 2 for 3 and had 3 RBI in today’s baseball game to help the Owls to a 14-7 win over Western New England University this afternoon.
The Owls started off the game with four runs in the 1st inning. Danny Dimatteo (Cape Cod Tech/ Dennis MA) had an RBI single and came around to score on a wild pitch in the inning.
Western New England responded with two runs in the top of the second. Eduardo Colmenares (Henry Clay/ Carcas Venezuela) and Kyle Maglio (Glastonbury/ Glastonbury CT) both had RBI base hits.
The Owls scored another 4 runs in the second inning. Senior Tim Santili (Southbridge, Tantasqua MA) hit a double to right center to drive in two runs for the big blow in the inning.
Murphy tripled to center field to drive in 2 runs in the 6th to cap the scoring for Westfield.
Sophomore Nate Barnes (Westfield, Westfield MA) started the game for the owls and pitched four innings. Freshman pitcher, David Manning (North Attleboro, North Attleboro MA) pitched two shut out innings in relief for the owls to earn the win.
Dan Whigham (Quabbin Regional, Barre, MA) was 4 for 4 with three runs scored for Westfield. Pat McWilliams (Duxbury, Duxbury MA), Connor Sheridan (South Hadley, South Haldey MA) and Dimatteo all finished with a pair of hits.
Starter Nick Salerno (Essex, Essex Junction VT) took the loss for WNEU, Daniel Morin (Salem, Salem NH) finished 4 for 5 with 3 runs scored. Stephen Buckley (Masuk, Monroe CT) had three hits.
Westfield State improves to 16-5 with the win. WNEU falls to 11-12 with the loss.
