Owls sweep in women’s volleyball

WESTFIELD – The Westfield State University swept a home women’s volleyball tri-match with Massachusetts Maritime Academy and Pine Manor College on Saturday.
The Owls are now 3-1 in the MASCAC and 6-16 overall. Mass. Maritime drops to 0-4 in the MASCAC and 2-21 overall. Pine Manor is 3-9.
Westfield opened the day by sweeping Mass. Maritime, 25-5, 25-11, 25-9, in a MASCAC match.
Freshmen Shannon Shea (9 kills, 4 digs) and Stana Wheeler (29 assists, 5 service aces) led the Owls. Sophomore Becca Green had four.

aces and seven digs and twin sister Sarah Green added six digs.
Alex Burgess-Chrost (2 kills) and Michaela Garrity (7 digs) led Mass. Maritime.
The Owls cruised to a 25-6, 25-11, 25-16 over Pine Manor College. Shannon Shea (8 kills, 6 digs) and Wheeler (28 assists, 6 aces) again led the Owls. Other top players were Sarah Green (9 digs, 2 aces), Carole Duquette (6 aces) and Chelsea Adams (5 kills, 5 aces).
Natasia Franklin had two kills and five blocks for Pine Manor in the Westfield game.
In the middle match, Mass. Maritime avenged a 3-2 defeat earlier this season by outlasting Pine Manor, 25-23, 20-25, 25-23, 25-23.
Deb Langley led Mass. Maritime with 12 assists, nine digs and two service aces and Alex Burgess-Chrost had 17 digs and eight kills. Meghan Weir contributed seven kills and four aces.
Destiny Mann (9 assists), 12 aces, 6 kills), Michelle Cole (5 kills, 7 assists) and Natasia Franklin (6 aces, 4 kills) led Pine Manor.
