WORCESTER – The Westfield State Owls (6-3, 1-0 MASCAC) came away with the 10-5 victory over Worcester State (3-6, 0-1 MASCAC) on the back of an impressive performance by senior goaltender Mimi Khampaeng (Hampden, Mass.), who tallied 15 saves.
Westfield came out of the gate hot scoring in the first half with six straight goals – three of them by senior midfielder Blair Smith (Milford, Mass). Senior Taylor Eaton (Nahant, Mass.), freshmen Sydney Lambert (Hanover, Mass.) and Alexa Tonelli (Shrewsbury, Mass.) also tallied points for the Owls during their 6-0 run.
Jackie Connors (Ashland, Mass) answered with an unassisted goal for the Lancers. With Worcester starting to control play, the Owls would strike back with a goal right before the halftime whistle when Lucy Barrett (Williamstown, Mass) netted the seventh goal for Westfield after a pass from Smith. The Owls would bring a 7-1 lead into the intermission.
Westfield came out of the half scoring two early goals that would quickly answered by four Lancer goals. The Blue and Gold goal scorers were Kaila Chase (Northbridge, Mass), Mackenzie Little (Marlboro, Mass), and Connors who added two of her own.
After the four straight goals from Worcester State, Khampaeng, aggressive off her line, would put a stop to Lancer scoring attempts for the remainder of play. The Westfield State Owls added one more goal from Rachel Testa (Westminster, Mass) to clinch the 10-5 victory.
Westfield State next travels to Smith College for a 7:00p.m. non-conference battle. The Lancers are back in action Tuesday when they travel to Rhode Island College for a 6:00 p.m. non-conference matchup. – Courtesy of Worcester State sports info
