Owls win opener

WESTFIELD – A quartet of players scored two goals each for the Owls, as the Westfield State University women’s lacrosse team won its season opener by an 8-4 margin over local rival Western New England Unversity at Golden Bear Stadium in Springfield on Sunday afternoon.
After falling behind 1-0, Westfield scored five unanswered goals, including a pair by Brooke Williams (Minnechaug/Wilbraham, Mass.), and Stephanie Godek’s (West Springfield, Mass.) marker with 7:36 left in the first half proved to be the game winner.

Williams, Godek, Sydney Lambert (Hanover, Mass.) and Elizabeth Navoni (Mansfield, Mass.) each tallied a pair of goals for the Owls (1-0).
Westfield out-shot the Bears 27-20 and had a 21-14 advantage in shots on goal.
Senior Alanah Melanson (Chelmsford, Mass.) (8 saves) and sophomore Maria Woodall (King Phillip/Norfolk, Mass.) (4 saves) split the game in goal for Westfield, each yielding just a pair of goals.
Western New England (1-2) was led by a pair of goals from Julia Canning.
Western New England will be right back in action on Tuesday afternoon, as the Golden Bears are set to host Castleton University at 4 p.m. Westfield State (1-0) returns home to host Mount Holyoke on Wednesday. – Courtesy of Westfield State University Sports
