WESTFIELD – Westfield State senior Naloti Palma (Westborough, Mass.) took first place in the shot put at the New England Division III women’s indoor track & field championships for the third consecutive year, while also placing fifth in the weight throw.
Palma’s winning throw in the shot put was 13.52 meters (44’4.25″), while her best weight throw was 15.39 meters (50’6″).
The Owls finished 12th out of 30 teams at the championship meet at Middlebury College, tops among MASCAC competition. MIT won the overall team scoring, picking up 123.50 points compared to 93.93 for second place Williams College.
Sophomore Ashley Craig (Groton, Mass.) set a personal best and school record in the pole vault, finishing second in the competition with a final jump of 3.65 meters (11’11.5″). Last week, Craig won the MASCAC championship with a meet-record jump of 3.4 meters (11’1.75″).
Freshman Brianna Deloury (Andover, Mass.) also scored 0.5 points in the high jump, tying for 8th place with a best jump of 1.58 meters (5’2.5″).
In the track events, Ashley Monahan (Springfield, Mass.) and Sabrina Pray (Mansfield, Mass.) registered points for Westfield. Monahan took fifth place in the 800-meter with a time of 2:18.65. After breaking the school record in the event earlier in the season, Pray finished sixth in the 60-meter hurdles (9.35).
All-American cross country runner Jessie Cardin (Sutton, Mass.), meanwhile, ran 10th in the 3000-meter run, finishing in 10:34.47.
All qualified Owls will compete next Friday and Saturday at the All-New England Championships at Boston University.
