Phifer, Spanknabel net seven to down Saints

WESTFIELD – Two players combined for seven goals to take down one local team.
Addison Phifer scored four goals and Gage Spanknabel tallied three goals to help Hopkins Academy overwhelm St. Mary’s 8-2.
Aaron Blanchard had a hand in both St. Mary’s scores, netting one goal and assisting on another from Jack Lamirande.
Hayden Lussier made 18 saves for the Saints (2-6).

FIELD HOCKEY
Bombers shut out Purple Knights
Westfield 3, Holyoke 0

Solimar Franco, Lara Finnie, and Abby Daley scored one goal apiece to lead Westfield to a home victory. Daley, Thea Glenzel, and Avery Guiel assisted.
Westfield goalie Lindsay Brown made seven saves to earn a shutout.
Holyoke goalie C. Dunn made 19 saves, and had a shutout through the game’s first half.

Golden Eagles stave off Bombers
Central 3, Westfield 2

Westfield rallied from a two-goal deficit to within one, 3-2, with about five minutes remaining in the first half before both teams played a scoreless second half.
Jimmy Hagan scored both Westfield goals. Hagan’s first goal was unassisted, and his second came on a pass from Chrispin Nifasha.
“We played pretty well tonight,” said Westfield coach Andrew Joseph, whose team also rallied from a 1-0 deficit to force a tie. “The result is disappointing, but we are trying to get better just a little bit every day. I think we took a step forward in that direction tonight. It’s a loss, but one that we can build on.”
Westfield fell to 3-6.

Duggan sneaks past STM
Duggan Academy 2, St. Mary’s 1

Allie Goodreau connected on St. Mary’s lone goal off a pass from Amelia Willenborg. Saints’ goalie Jessica Crsoby made seven saves.
“This was a tough loss,” St. Mary’s coach Patrick Olearcek said. “For as well as the girls have played all year, today we seemed flat, lacked aggressiveness, and made some mental mistakes the made the difference.
(We are) hoping we can erase this performance from our memories and come out hungry (Thursday) against Franklin Tech,” coach Olearcek said.
St. Mary’s fell to 6-2-2.

Chepurin scores in Tigers loss
Franklin Tech 2, Westfield Technical Academy 1

Westfield Tech captain Angelica Chepurin found the back of the net on a direct kick from well outside the 18 in the 10th minute of the game.
Westfield Tech fought off an onslaught of attacks from Franklin Tech, only allowing seven shots on target. Tigers’ keeper Ari Levere made five saves.

Harris, Gators prevail
Gateway 4, Smith Academy 0

Erin Harris scored the game’s first two goals – both on assists from Ava Auclair – and Larissa Kingsley tallied a goal off a pass from Hannah Duggan assist as Gateway built a 3-0 lead through one half.
Gateway ninth grader Maddie Clark scored her first varsity goal midway through the second half. Peyton Bucko assisted.
“We played an exceptional game, moved the ball very well, and had great scoring,” Gateway coach Steve Estelle said.
Becca Herman earned a shutout in net. She was helped immensely by her team’s defensive effort. The Gators (6-2) cut off nearly every Smith scoring opportunity.

GOLF
Willenborg on par with birdie, eagle
Easthampton 16.5, St. Mary’s 7.5

St. Mary’s Luke Willenborg led all golfers with a 34 at Wyckoff Country Club. Willenborg eagled the third hole and birdied the ninth to finish even par.
Manny Umana took three out of four possible points for the Saints with a 46.

Adam leads Tigers
Mohawk 14.5, Westfield Technical Academy 9.5

Trent Adam and Riley Sullivan swept their matches – Adam was the low scorer – and Westfield Tech lost a closely contested matchup at East Mountain Country Club.
Dave Romani and Nick Moran also played well for the Tigers (3-6).

Lancers topple Bombers
Longmeadow 164, Westfield 161

Jack Hogan and Brian Daley each shot a 39 for Westfield (8-2) at Tekoa Country Club.

GYMNASTICS
Liptak, Wozniak boost Bombers
Westfield (128.975) def. Hampshire (120.4), Agawam (118.25)

Westfield’s Kylie Liptak and Miranda Wozniak placed first (33.225) and second (31.925), respectively on the all-around to lead Westfield (4-0). Liptak tied for first on the beam (8.325), tied for first on the bars (8.25) with Bombers’ Claire Smith, and won the vault (8.25). Wozniak placed second on beam (8.3) and third on bars (7.75).

Emily Buchter (8 digs, 2 aces, 1 kill, 1 assist), Allie Methe (7 digs, 4 aces, 3 kills), Kaitlyn Haseltine (2 digs, 5 aces, 11 assists), Jen Motsko (4 digs, 5 kills), and Sarah Cerone (2 aces, 1 kill, 1 block) led Southwick.
