SOUTHWICK – The Southwick High School girls’ basketball team is back … to winning.
McKinley White had a career-high 23 points to lead Southwick in a 51-17 drubbing of visiting Pope Francis Thursday. Ashley Shea chipped in 12 for the Rams.
Southwick opened the season 4-0 before suffering a five-point loss on the road at Ware on Monday.
In JV action, Pope Francis escaped with a narrow 35-33 victory. Jillian Hess and Maura Wurster finished with 11 and 8 points, respectively for the Rams’ JV squad.

Hornets buzz past Saints
Dean Tech 30, St. Mary 27

Dean Tech rallied from a 9-4, first-quarter deficit to escape the Whip City with a slim victory at Westfield Middle School North. Makayla Marrero led the Hornets with 11 points.
St. Mary’s Jessica Crosby scored a team-high nine points. Saints’ Madie Donais had six.

Red Raiders top Tigers
Commerce 57, Westfield Technical Academy 8

Breanna Machena scored a game-high 19 points to lead Commerce at home. Red Raiders’ Alexis Anderson and Jayzabel Torres each had 10.
Taya Allen led Westfield Tech with four points, followed by Jaymee hall (2) and Nina Kirpicheva (2).

Cybercats down Gators
Sci-Tech 27, Gateway 9

Ann Harrington scored 11 points to lead Sci-Tech on the road. Joanaa Arkoette, Audrey Gamble, Rebecca Herman, and Jenna Leja each netted two for Gateway.

BOYS’ HOOPS
McCann Tech 50, Gateway 42

Steve Lemire scored 15 points, six of which came in the fourth quarter, to help secure a victory for McCann Tech Wednesday.
“He was definitely the difference for them,” Gateway coach Mike O’Connell said.
Pete Kowal recorded a game-high 16 for Gateway. Gators’ Brett Turban, Brad Moreau, and Shane Mastello scored eight apiece.
Gateway rallied from a 14-6 first-quarter deficit to pull within three points of a tie at the half. The Gators kept within striking distance of McCann in the third quarter and early in the fourth before running out of steam.
“We made too many turnovers and missed free throws late in the game,” O’Connell said. “Unfortunately we came away with a loss.”
