FITCHBURG – Westfield State’s dynamic duo of Jill Valley (Mahar/Orange, Mass.) and Forbasaw Nkamebo (Amherst/Amherst, Mass.) each scored 18 points to help Westfield State to a record-setting 106-30 win over Fitchburg State in the MASCAC opener for both teams Wednesday.
Westfield shattered its mark for largest margin of victory. The 76-point win outpaced the record margin of 63 set in a 76-13 win over The University of St. Joseph (Conn.) during the 1990-91 season.
Westfield improves to 8-4, 1-0 in the MASCAC. Fitchburg falls to 0-13 and 0-1 in the MASCAC.
The Owls uptempo style forced the falcons into 42 turnovers while garnering 34 steals. Westfield shot 50.6 percent from the floor.
Valley and Nkamebo posted identical 8-11 shooting marks from the floor. Valley added seven steals. Kirsy Segarra (Holyoke/Holyoke, Mass.) netted 14 points for Westfield, Alyssa Darling (Palmer/Palmer, Mass.) added 12 and Kristen Swain (Bellingham/Bellingham, Mass.) scored 10. A total of 12 players scored for the Owls.
Westfield led 39-9 after the first quarter, 59-17 at the half, and 90-20 after three quarters.
Stephanee Leveillee led Fitchburg with eight points and 10 rebounds.
