Saints cap wet week with win

WESTFIELD – “It has been insane with the rain,” St. Mary boys’ tennis coach Ray Neilsen said prior to Friday’s anticipated match at Greenfield.
It was a whirlwind week for St. Mary, which began its match against Belchertown only to have it postponed due to rain. Zach Brown held a 6-3, 3-1 lead against one of the area’s top 10 ranked opponents. That match will continue Memorial Day at noon.
On Wednesday, St. Mary enjoyed victories at first and second singles, but fell to Turners Falls in the team outcome, 3-2.
Thursday’s match against Sabis was postponed. It has been rescheduled for Saturday at the Westfield High tennis courts, beginning at noon.
Finally, on Friday, St. Mary’s enjoyed a full match and a win, defeating host Greenfield 3-2.
St. Mary’s Zach Brown and Zach Slepchuk won at first and second singles, respectively, 6-3, 6-0 and 6-0, 6-0. First doubles pair, Austin Gois and Matt Benoit, won 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 for the Saints (7-5).
“We filed all of our paperwork – we’re hoping to make the tournament,” Neilsen said.
St. Mary will qualify for the region’s team tournament with a .500 record or better, or first or second place in the division.
