Salem State Ices Westfield State, 5-2

Salem – Chad Goodwin (Whitinsville, MA) scored three second-period goals and also added an assist to help lead the Salem State Vikings to a 5-2 victory over Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference leader Westfield State on Saturday afternoon at Rockett Arena.
The win improves Salem State to 3-3-1 and 2-1-1 in conference while Westfield State dips to 6-3 and 3-2 in the MASCAC.
The Owls jumped on top in the opening period when halfway through, Tyler Prendergast (Richmond Hill, ON) rebounded Taylor Murphy’s (Toronto, ON) shot and put it on the top shelf of the goalie’s blind side for the only score in the first.
Salem State evened the score when Goodwin flicked in a shot in front of the net that trickled behind the goalie early in the second. Kyle Phelan (Barnstable, MA) and Derek Crocker (Wakefield, MA) were credited with the assists. Minutes later Goodwin scored his second goal on assists from Phelan and Stephen McManus (Westwood, MA). Westfield State then tied the game at the 9:05 mark when Dalton Jay (Hamilton, ON) put in a shot past the goalie to make it a 2-2 affair.
Goodwin gave Salem State the lead for good at 16:24 when his hat-trick put the Vikings on top 3-2. Goodwin received an assist from Andrew Bettencourt (Riverside, RI) and Keaton Cashin (Boxford, MA). Three minutes later Kristofer Faric (Whitby, ON) scored the fourth goal of the period for Salem State to make it a 4-2 game. Faric scored on a power-play that was set up by Chris Mastropietro (Revere, MA) and Goodwin.
Thirty seconds into the third period the Vikings iced the contest when a shot by Bettencourt deflected off an Owl and went into the back of the net. Bettencourt was credited with the goal with McManus and Faric (Whitby, ON) getting the assists.
Salem State’s Ryan Sutliffe (Las Vegas, NV) had 28 saves on 30 shots in the win while Westfield State’s Ian Perrier (Whitehorse, YT) had 32 saves on 37 shots.
