Schwartz, Bombers shut down Lancers

WESTFIELD – Westfield pitcher Ari Schwartz tossed a three-hit shutout, and the top-seeded Bombers blanked the visiting Longmeadow Lancers (13-9), the eighth seed, in a Division 1 baseball quarterfinal 3-0 Monday at Jachym Field.
Schwartz recorded seven strikeouts and yielded just two walks.

Westfield (15-6) broke up Longmeadow pitcher Brendan Philbin’s no-hit bid with Stefan Krol’s one-out single in the bottom of the fifth inning. Krol advanced to second base on a throwing error. Jake Colapietro walked. Matt Hastings singled to load the bases. Aidan Dunn scored pinch runner Baley Collier with a ground ball to second base. Sean Moorhouse reached on a wild pitch third strike, allowing Colapietro to come home for a 2-0 lead.
Westfield tacked on an insurance run with a bit of small ball in the sixth.
Anthony Clark led off the bottom of the sixth inning with a single. J.D. Huntley moved Clark over to second base with a sacrifice bunt. Jake Colapietro doubled to deep right center field, scoring pinch runner Dillon Bazegian.
Westfield moves on to the semifinals where it will meet the winner of Pope Francis (14-7)-Taconic (19-1).
