WESTFIELD – The Westfield South Little League 11-Year-Old All-Stars have managed to put an District II opening round loss to city rival behind them. The cure: a couple of victories.
Westfield South trounced Agawam 11-3 Wednesday night in its latest effort. The South benefited from a combined effort on the mound from starting pitcher Colin Scanlon, and relievers Matt Pelletier and Darrin Roberts.
Scanlon (3 2-3 innings pitched, 2 runs allowed, 1 earned, 4 Ks), Pelletier (2 1-3 inn., 4 Ks), and Roberts (1 inn., 3 Ks) combined to pitch a 4-hitter.
Westfield’s offense took a 6-0 lead early – thanks in large part to a two-run single from Darrin Roberts in the second inning – and chipped away at Agawam throughout the remaining innings.
David Tirrell hit a 2-run, sixth-inning single, and Tony Torres, Scanlon, and Pelletier (3-for-4) each contributed run-scoring base hits.
In other games, Westfield North blasted Northampton 13-0 in a mercy-rule, shortened game to remain unbeaten at 3-0. No details were reported as of press time.
