WESTFIELD – All the stars were out as Westfield North and South waged an incredible battle at Papermill Field Thursday night, setting the stage for some fantastic semifinal action this weekend all throughout the western part of the state.
Westfield South (4-0) rallied from a 9-1 deficit to defeat Westfield North 12-9 in a somewhat-friendly battle of the city’s best.
Jack Yvon went 3-for-3 with a home run, six RBIs, and two runs scored to lead the South. Yvon provided his team with some late insurance, hitting a two-run single in the bottom of the fifth for the three-run cushion.
Jody Garwacki blasted a two-run homer in the South’s four-run fourth inning to complete the rally. The team began its comeback in the second inning, scoring five runs all with two outs.
Kyle Roberts (3 walks, 3 runs), Tyler Delgado (2-for-4, double, RBI), and Connor Koziol (2-2, 2 runs) also delivered offensively for the South.
Koziol was instrumental on the mound, allowing just three hits and no runs on 52 pitches over the last four innings. He struck out six batters.
“I’m proud of the guys,” Westfield South manager Mike Raposo said
Connor Cottengim hit a two-run homer for the North (3-1).
The South, having earned the top seed entering the semifinal round, will host a game Saturday at Cross Street Field at 5 p.m. The North will play at Southampton (4-0) at 1.
In other Little League action, the Westfield South 11-Year-Old All-Stars will play Agawam at Cross Street Field in the first game of the day Saturday at Cross Street Field. Game time is 1 p.m. The North travels to Northampton.
