WEST SPRINGFIELD – Easy come, easy go.
That is not a totally accurate assessment of Friday night’s girls lacrosse thriller at Clark Field as Westfield worked hard to build a three-goal lead, but West Springfield rallied with a 5-1 run, scoring five of the game’s final seven goals to complete an 8-7 comeback.
“At the end of the day, I think they made less mistakes,” Westfield High School girls lacrosse head coach Paul Fenwick said.
There was no mistaking the Bombers intensity level though.
Emma Metcalf and Lara Finnie staked Westfield to a 3-0 lead with first quarter goals. Metcalf and Finnie scored in the opening minutes of the game, netting consecutive goals within an 11-second span at the 10:47 and 10:36 marks. Metcalf’s score was the direct result of an eight-meter shot. Finnie scored on an eight-meter shot late in the quarter.
Westfield appeared to be firing on all cylinders. The Bombers defense bottled up West Springfield in the early going with goalie Danielle Coe shutting out the Terriers through 12-plus minutes of action.
“The first quarter was phenomenal,” coach Fenwick said. “Obviously the first quarter, I think we owned that. The second quarter they came out of the gates, came back at us, evened it out, and then it was game on.”
West Springfield fought back in the second quarter, pulling to within one point of a tie, 3-2, with back-to-back goals from Emma Giang and Lauren Cauley.
Westfield pushed the lead back up to three, 5-2, with a late first half goal from Annie Boiseau and an early second half goal from Metcalf.
West Side stepped up its intensity late in the third quarter and carried it over into the fourth. The Terriers scored two goals within a 23-second span – – one each from Jordan LaValley and Giang – – to pull within one, 5-4.
Westfield responded with a goal with 3:27 remaining in the third quarter as Finnie netted her third score of the game. The Bombers led 6-4.
West Springfield soon countered with a goal from Kathryn Bolivar with 21.9 seconds left in the quarter. The Terriers tied it early in the fourth quarter on a score from Cauley. Giang gave West Side their first lead of the game 27 seconds later with a goal. Sofia Callahan scored a key goal with 7:52 remaining in the fourth quarter to provide the Terriers with just enough cushion to salt away the victory.
Metcalf managed to pull Westfield within one on a goal with 4:05 remaining, but West Side controlled the ball over the remaining two minutes to escape with the victory.

Southwick remained undefeated, improving to 6-0 with a thrilling five-set win over Holyoke on Friday night.
Rylan Secovich (15 digs, 17 kills), Grayson Poole (45 assists, 19 digs, 11 kills, 4 aces), Jace Turgeon (10 kills), and Mason Imbriglio (32 digs) led the way for Southwick.

Westfield swept singles competition in a match with Chicopee Comp to come away victorious.
Chance Koumentakos defeated Chicopee Comp’s Max Morgado at first singles, 6-4, 6-1. Westfield’s Seth Bodendorf beat Brandon Shlafermen in a hard-fought match at second singles, 6-4, 7-6, (7-5). Bombers’ Alex Dawicki shut out Colts’ Josiah Otlandi, 6-0, 6-0.
