Three Owls headed to NCAA championships

WESTFIELD – Three Westfield State University athletes are competing in the NCAA Division III indoor track and field championships March 8-9 at North Central College in Naperville, Ill.
Senior pole vaulter Tom Gauger (Billerica) and 800 meter runner Brendan Corcoran (Walpole) are representing the Westfield men, and sophomore Targie Gervais (Springfield) is participating in the 60 meter women’s championships.
Gauger is makingh his third appearance at the national finals. He competed in the NCAA indoor and outdoor championships during the 2011-2012 academic year, and he earned All-America honors by placing eighth in the pole vault at the outdoor meet.
Gauger is seeded ninth with a season-best of 15-11 ¼ at the Tufts Last Chance Invitational. He set a school record by vaulting 16-5 ¼ indoors last season.
Corcoran is seeded 12th in the always competitive 800 meter run with a time of 1:53.63. This is his first trip to the national championships.
Gervais is making her second appearance at the national championships; she earned All-America honors as a freshman by placing seventh in the 100 meter dash at the 2011 outdoor meet. Gervais did not compete during the 2011-2012 academic year.
The Springfield Central (HS) Comet is ranked second in the 60 meter dash with a school record clocking of 7.66. Seeded first is Buffalo State senior Sasha Henry (7.63).
