NORTHFIELD – The Westfield Voc-Tech boys’ soccer team beat the heat, and survived a potential roadblock at Pioneer Valley Christian School Wednesday. The Tigers won 3-0.
Westfield Voc-Tech coach Kyle Dulude said the soaring temps and high humidity had a negative effect on his team, but that his players managed to take advantage of enough opportunities to overcome the adversity.
“Both teams really struggled with the heat,” Dulude said. “We missed a half-dozen open nets due to lack of focus but did finish three times to get the result.”
Voc-Tech scored the game’s first goal in the 30th minute on a shot from Dmitriy Stepanchuk. Laxmi Basnet assisted on the play.
Twenty minutes later, Tyler Hall scored an unassisted goal. Hall then connected with Mike Brut for the third goal in the 70th minute.
Dulude said Petr Melnik helped key the victory with a solid effort in his first varsity start at fullback, and credited Cole Provost with a solid game.
