WESTFIELD – The defending champion Westfield High baseball team provided plenty of drama en route to its Division 1 title last season. They are whetting fans’ appetites again.
On Tuesday, Jake Toomey (3-for-4) delivered the game-winning hit in the bottom of the bottom of the seventh inning to lift Westfield past East Longmeadow 4-3 at Bullens Field.
Toomey plated Connor Sullivan, who had reached on an error and advanced to third on Colin Dunn’s sac-bunt.
Chris Sullivan (RBI), Matt Irzyk, and Craig Lacey (RBI) each had a hit for Westfield.
Gators post stunner
Gateway 6, Sabis 5
HUNTINGTON – Gateway Regional exploded for five runs in the fifth inning and held on for a key victory.
Gateway starting pitcher Brett Turban (2 Ks) scattered four runs over four plus innings, and reliever Geoff Sobotka escaped several bases-loaded situations to hold Sabis at bay.
Curtis Dowers landed the key hit, a two-out, two-run double to cap Gateway’s five-run fifth. Ethan Gamble, Tom Ruffo, and Justin Edginer also had RBI hits in the inning.
Gateway improved to 7-2 overall, 4-1 league.

WESTFIELD – Southwick’s Danny McClellan hit a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning to escape the Whip City with a narrow victory Monday.
Andrew Mitchell and Nick Maserelli each scored a run for the Rams.
Bob Hamel pitched a complete-game, 3-hitter for Southwick. He recorded 10 strikeouts.
St. Mary’s defense robbed Southwick of several hits, keeping the game close throughout.
