Vazquez, Powers named ‘Players of Week’

WESTFIELD – Westfield State University senior guard Lee Vazquez has been named the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) men’s basketball player of the week.
Vazquez averaged 26.0 points, 5.0 steals and 4.3 assists in the Owls’ three victories last week. He shot 45 percent from the field (28 for 62) and 41 percent from 3-point range (15-37), canning five 3-point baskets in each game.
The hustling 5-6 guard scored 22 points, including the go ahead basket with 49 seconds remaining in a 70-66 win over Worcester.
He racked up 29 points (17 in a 32-12 scoring run in the final 10 minutes), eight steals and six assists in an 82-66 triumph over Newbury. Vazquez also scored a game-high 27 points in an 82-71 victory at Bridgewater State.
Westfield (12-3 overall, 2-1 MASCAC) returns to action on Tuesday, Jan. 15, when it hosts MCLA in a key conference game. MCLA is the only unbeaten team (2-0) in the MASCAC.
TJ POWERS HOCKEY TEAM: Westfield State University sophomore forward TJ Powers has been selected the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) men’s ice hockey player of the week.
The sophomore forward from East Greenwich, R.I., tallied three goals and four assists in the Owls’ 2-1 week.
Powers notched a goal and two assists in Westfield’s 4-3 come-from-behind victory over Worcester State and had the game-winning goal and an assist in a 5-3 victory over Southern New Hampshire.
In Westfield’s 3-2 overtime setback to MASCAC leader Plymouth State, Powers scored the game-tying goal with 1:02 remaining in regulation and also had an assist.
The Owls have two conference games this week, both on the road, at Framingham on Tuesday and UMass Dartmouth on Thursday.
