Westfield State edges WConn in OT

WESTFIELD – Sophomore Emily Williams (Deerfield, Mass/Frontier Regional HS) scored 4:56 into overtime to lift Westfield State University to a 3-2 victory over Western Connecticut State University in conference field hockey action on Friday night.
Westfield finishes the regular season 4-7 in the conference and 7-10 overall; the Owls clinched a berth in the eight-team Little East Conference postseason tournament with the overtime victory. Western Connecticut is 1-10 and 4-14.
The Colonials took a 1-0 lead 15 minutes into the game on a goal by senior forward Shelly Davies (Newtown, Conn.).
The Owls scored the equalizer in the 26th minute on an unassisted goal by freshman Meg Doherty (Mansfield, Mass.).
Westfield took a 2-0 lead less than two minutes later when senior Danielle Grenon (Somerset) converted a penalty stroke.
Western Connecticut tied the score with 1:48 remaining in the first half on an unassisted goal from Kim Gigante (Bedford Falls, N.Y.).
Westfield outshot Western Conn., 19-15, and led in penalty corners, 11-9.
