WHS beats hurricane, opponents to earn postseason berth

WESTFIELD – The threat of Hurricane Sandy has already had an impact on the local high school schedule with the tournament bearing down upon several teams.
The Westfield High School girls’ soccer team, which was scheduled to play today, played a pair of games this weekend in anticipation of the poor weather conditions. The Bombers defeated Amherst 2-0 Saturday and Longmeadow 1-0 Sunday to qualify for the Western Massachusetts Division I tournament.
All games were suspended today with Western Massachusetts schools closed.
The Western Massachusetts Division II golf champion St. Mary Saints will have to wait at least one week longer as Monday’s state championship was postponed until Wednesday, October 31 at Redtail Golf Club with an 11 a.m. shotgun start.
Later this week, on Friday, the Westfield High School football team is slated to travel to Springfield to take on the Central Golden Eagles. The Bombers’ cross country team will participate in the Pioneer Valley Interscholastic Athletic Conference championships at Stanley Park.
