AGAWAM – The Westfield High School boys’ volleyball team rallied from a 2-set-to-1 deficit to remain unbeaten 10-0, setting up a potential matchup of unbeatens on Friday when Chicopee Comp (10-0) comes to the Whip City for a blockbuster contest at 6:15 p.m.
The Bombers defeated the host Agawam Brownies, 25-18, 21-25, 19-25, 25-21, 15-9.
Westfield won the first set, but fell behind losing Games 2 and 3. The Bombers regrouped in the fourth set to force a decisive fifth frame.
In that final set, Westfield took an 8-2 lead, and played side-out volleyball to finish off Agawam.
“Agawam definitely came ready to play,” Westfield coach Tyler Wingate said. “Our swings that were going down against other teams were not going down tonight. You could see the frustration in our play in the first three sets. We were up and down, all over the place … We learned from it well and stepped up when we needed to.”
Manny Golob (23 kills, 11 digs) and Ryan Bucko (12 kills, 3 blocks) led the Westfield offense.
Bucko recorded his 100th career block on his second block of the game.
“It’s a significant number and accomplishment,” Wingate said of the school’s all-time leader in blocks. “One hundred is a big number for someone.”
Eric Shilyuk (35 assists, 9 digs), Dmitriy Doroshenko (31 digs), and Isaiah Headley (24 digs) were also instrumental in Westfield’s victory.
