NORTH ADAMS – The MCLA women’s soccer team fell 5-0 to conference foe Westfield State Saturday afternoon at Schewcraft field. MCLA drops to 2-4-3 overall and sits at 0-2-1 in league play. The Owls improve to 4-6 and are now 2-1 in the conference.
The first half was dominated by the Owls. Confusion after a cross lead to senior midfielder Taylor Grijalva’s (Stratham, NH) first goal of the year in the 13th minute. Later in the half, off of a rebound senior forward Kate Matroni (Hampden, MA) scored her 4th goal of the year in the 23rd minute. Just a minute later, driving down the field, freshman midfielder Bella Eduardo (Pepperell, MA) scored her 3rd goal of the year in the 24th minute.
The second half proved to be more of the same. The Owls would score two more goals. On another confusing play, Grijalva scored her second goal of the game in the 69th minute. Just outside the 18, another goal was scored by freshman forward Alyssa Richard (Plymouth, MA) in the 85th minute, it was her first of the year and her career.
Senior goalie Kathryn Daly (South Cairo, NY) came in relief at the start of the second half and gave a strong performance. Daly stopped a penalty shot in the 52nd minute from senior fullback Shannon McCleary (Quincy, MA), as well as making two more saves in the 66th and 85th minute.
For the game, Westfield held a 27-3 shot advantage, including a 12-2 shot advantage in the first half.
MCLA is back in action at Schewcraft field against Western New England at 5pm next Tuesday, while Westfield State will travel to Elms next Wednesday. – Story courtesy MCLA sports info
