WESTFIELD – The Westfield Voc-Tech softball team overcame the odds to cap the week on a positive note.
Westfield Voc-Tech’s nine-member squad avoided a letdown – it being a Friday of vacation week – drubbing Sci-Tech 14-2 Friday at Whitney Field.
Cathie Iglesias went 2-for-3 with 3 RBIs for Voc-Tech (4-2). Tigers’ Elyza Colson, Amber Lindsay, and Katie Nesmelova each collected RBI base hits.
Nesmelova made a spectacular catch at first base.
“We are a nine-member team made up of great student-athletes,” Voc-Tech coach Kyle Dulude said. “I am very proud of them for their on- and off-the-field efforts, as well as the efforts the put in the classroom during the school day.”
The school’s softball team performed community service on Thursday, cleaning up a yard for an individual who is battling cancer.
“It was great to see them come together yesterday off the field and then again today on the field,” Dulude said. “They can go back to the classroom knowing they had a productive week on and off the field.”
The players, who also volunteered for the recent 5K road race, will participate in Earth Day cleanups over the next few weeks.
