WESTFIELD – St. Mary’s Zach Girard took a nice cross from Nick Garde right outside the 18-yard-line, made a couple of touches, and chipped the ball over the fast-approaching goalie for the game-winner with seven minutes remaining to help the Saints top tournament-bound Pioneer Valley Christian School 2-1 in a boys’ soccer game Tuesday at Westfield Middle School South.
Kieran O’Donnell scored a first-half goal for St. Mary. Saints’ Alex Parentella assisted on the play.
St. Mary goalie Colin Blake made five saves.
“It was a pretty evenly played game,” St. Mary coach Andrew Martin said. “It was a hard-fought win, good points that we fought for.”
The Saints (8-4-1) need just one point to earn a postseason berth.
