MONSON – The St. Mary High School boys’ lacrosse team built an early lead, and outlasted Monson with an extra push.
St. Mary and Monson battled Monday at the Mustangs’ home with the Saints winning it in overtime, 12-11. For the Saints (1-12), it was their first victory of the year.
St. Mary got off to a 4-0 start with four first-quarter goals. Both teams traded a pair of goals in the second quarter, and the Saints led 6-2 at the half.

Monson climbed back within striking distance with a five-run outburst, outscoring St. Mary 5-2 to pull within 8-7. In the fourth quarter, the Saints produced three runs. The Mustangs, with four goals tied it 11-all.
St. Mary won it in overtime.
Aaron Blanchard (3 assists) and Padraig Smith (2 assists) scored four goals apiece to lead St. Mary. Saints’ Ed Towers collected two goals, and, Val Reopel and Joe Taupier each had one assist.
St. Mary goalie Jeremy Hoar finished with 10 saves.

Tigers walk off again

Westfield Technical Academy 4, Pioneer Valley Christian Academy 3 (8 inn.)
Westfield Tech kept its tournament hopes alive with another walkoff win.
Alex Sparks reached base on an error, ending up on second base to begin the bottom of the eighth inning at Bullens Field. Pioneer Valley Christian intentionally walked Cody Garwacki. Brandon DeGray loaded the bases with a bunt single. Sparks scored on a wild pitch to win the game.
Degray, Sparks, Garwacki, Chris Boyden, Connor Medieros, and Dante Bongiovanni each finished with hits. Boyden and Andy Daniels drove in runs.
Daniels went six innings, scattering four hits while striking out nine. Garwacki got the win, pitching two innings with one hit and five Ks.
“(It was) not pretty, but my guys found a way to win,” Westfield Tech coach Bob Eak said.

Saints explode in fourth
St. Mary 7, Sci-Tech 0

St. Mary scored all seven runs in the fourth inning en route to a shutout at Westfield Middle School North.
Huntier Authier and Jack Lamirande had two hits apiece and a run scored to lead St. Mary. Saints’ Jake Butler (2 RBIs), John Daley (run, 2 walks), and Quinn Powers (run, 2 RBIs) each doubled.
Nate Bonini (5 inn., 3 hits, 1 K) and Daley (2 inn., 0 hits, 4 Ks) tossed a combined shutout on the hill for St. Mary.

Brittland belts a dinger
Smith Academy 30, Gateway 10

Dayna Brittland went 2-for-3 with a home run to lead Gateway.

Allen has a blast
Commerce 19, Westfield Technical Academy 5

Westfield Tech’s Taya Allen hit a three-run homer. Tigers’ pitcher Hannah Massoni had two Ks.

Bombers throttle Mustangs
Westfield 21, Monson 1

Kylie Buchanan (2 goals, 3 assists), Hannah Jarvis (1 goal, 4 assists), Kylie Bryant (4 goals), and Jillian Watson (5 goals) led Westfield in a rout.

Butler takes two
Hoosac Valley 19, St. Mary 2

Allie Mendel (6 goals) and Claudia Bresett (5 goals, 1 assist) netted six points apiece in leading Hoosac Valley to victory.
Aisling Butler scored two goals for St. Mary.

GIRLS’ TENNIS
Cards deal loss
Pope Francis 3, Westfield 2

Westfield won at first doubles as Emma Macleod and Camille Mchenzie defeated Gabriella Letendre and Kellyn Luczarski, 6-3, 6-0. The Bombers also won a forfeit at third singles.

Shedd a winner
Chicopee Comp 4, Saint Mary’s 1

Alexis Shedd conquered the wind and her opponent to give St. Mary’s its only win against Chicopee Comp.
On a very windy afternoon, Alexis Shedd moved up from her first singles position to face Chicopee Comp’s, Haley Tracy in third singles. Shedd hit strong forehand shots into the wind to take the first set in an impressive 6-1win. She led for the first three games in the second set when Haley Tracey began to mount a comeback.
Tracy pushed Shedd to an even match at 3-3 and the two teams traded games to end the second set tied 6-6. They went on to play a deciding tie-breaker. Shedd set out on an early lead in the tie-break, leading once again 3-0, and Haley came back to even the games 3-3 before Shedd pulled ahead to keep the lead, and winning 7-5 to win the match, 6-1, 7-6.

BOYS’ TENNIS
Saints shut out
Lee 5, St. Mary 0

St. Mary’s Ben Richter and Nick Gregoire lost a hard-fought battle to Julian Nejaime and Ethan Costi at second doubles, 6-1, 6-3.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL
Bombers down Falcons
Westfield def. Minnechaug 21-25, 25-18, 25-20, 25-12

Eddie Loboda (18 kills, 4 aces), Shane Kiendzior (12 kills), Tyler Stanton (20 digs, 5 aces), Scott Walsh (34 assists, 14 digs), and Ryan Murray (10 kills, 4 blocks) helped Westfield improve its standing among the elite teams in all of Western Mass. The Bombers improved to 12-2 overall, 8-0 North.

Sci-Tech def. Southwick-Tolland 25-10, 25-7, 19-25, 10-25, 15-12

Chris Baker (3 blocks, 5 kills), Nick Chambers (12 kills, 18 digs), Kacper Kisale (5 kills), Andrew Lachtara (18 assists, 1 ace, 4 digs), and Chance Tang (9 digs) contributed for Southwick.

Mitchell Longley (run, 2 RBIs), Mason St. Pierre (3 RBIs), and Jacob Colapietero (run) each collected two hits to fuel the Westfield offense. Bombers’ Sean Moorhouse doubled and drove in three runs, and Anthony Clark had a double and two RBIs.
Westfield pitcher Devin Baker scattered six hits over five innings of work on the mound. He struck out three batters, and walked two.
Stefan Krol (4 Ks) tossed two scoreless innings of relief for Westfield.

GIRLS’ TENNIS
Lenox 5, St. Mary 0

Lenox silenced a St. Mary squad playing without its experienced senior players.
