WESTFIELD – The St. Mary Saints boys’ basketball team is looking a bit heavenly these days.
St. Mary outscored the opposition 33-19 in the second half to power past McCann Tech 59-38 Wednesday night at Westfield South Middle School. The Saints improved to 14-4, but more importantly kept their league title hopes alive.
If St. Mary and Smith Voke – who both have two league losses – can both defeat Dean Tech, all three teams would be co-champs of the Tri-County League regular season title.
On Wednesday, St. Mary’ Matt Plasse (19 points), Justin Crosby (14), and Sam Thresher (11) all managed double-digit points. Anthony Garde finished with seven for the Saints.

Gateway 69, Holyoke Catholic 45
Calvin Dowers scored a game-high 21 points, Ryan Fisk recorded a double-double (10 points, 12 rebounds), and Justin Edinger chipped in 10 points to lead Gateway (2-15) to a season-sweep of Holyoke Catholic.
“We played some pretty good ball tonight,” said Gateway coach Mike O’Connell.
Gateway built an early eight-point lead, took a 10-point lead into the half, outscored Holyoke Catholic by seven points in the third quarter, and added 23 points in the fourth quarter.
The Gators will have a chance to improve upon its regular season record at home against Renaissance (Friday), Monson (Sunday), and on senior night against St. Mary (Monday).
