WESTFIELD – It wasn’t easy but after 32 minutes of hotly contested high school girls basketball action, St. Mary’s slipped past Hampden Charter School of Science, 33-32, at Westfield Intermediate School.
“We did a great job of working the ball (around and) … inside,” St. Mary’s High School girls basketball head coach Rodney Rodriguez said. “We have a very talented group of young girls.”
While Jessica Crosby (14) points, Allison Goodreau (7), and Emma Goodreau (7) fueled the offense, Crosby, Erin Olearcek, Anna Kosinsky, and Amanda Willenborg delivered defensively.
As a team, St. Mary’s held Hampden Charter’s Madison Sheehan well below her season average. Sheehan finished with 14 points. The Saints forced a key turnover in the waning seconds, and limited HCSS to a long shot at the buzzer that went awry.
St. Mary’s improved to 6-3.
