Spring season on hold

BaseballSnowWESTFIELD – The rain/snow delay continue to sideline area high school sports teams.
The entire slate of local games was postponed Wednesday at Westfield, Westfield Technical Academy, St. Mary, Southwick, and Gateway Regional High Schools Wednesday due to poor field conditions as a result of Monday’s snow. Inclement weather (rain) threatened to wash out the majority of Thursday’s sporting events as well.
“I’ve had to cancel more games for snow this week (for spring sports) than I did all basketball season,” said Gateway athletic director Matt Bonenfant. Bonenfant is also the school’s head softball coach.
Thursday’s Gateway-Smith Academy softball game has already been postponed, and a rain out of the Gateway-Granby baseball is expected, Bonenfant said.
Westfield High athletic director Eileen Flaherty has also been busy rescheduling games, meets, and matches all week. The only official score in the book for the Bombers thus far this spring is a boys’ lacrosse victory, celebrated last Thursday.
Flaherty was anticipating another day or two of postponements.
“If we get as much rain as they think (Thursday), then the fields might be unplayable even on Friday,” she said.
Southwick canceled its entire slate of sporting events Wednesday in anticipation of Thursday’s inclement weather. The Westfield Tech baseball and softball teams have a planned off day.
Barring any unforeseen winter weather conditions, the Westfield boys’ volleyball team will host Chicopee Comprehensive in a season opener Thursday at 6:15 p.m.
