BLAKE CROTEAU
BOSTON – Westfield High senior distance runner Blake Croteau has been running ahead of the pack all season. So it comes as no surprise that one his final “state-ments” left everyone in the dust.
Croteau had a gold medal run in the 2-mile, finishing with the best time of any high school runner in the state all season at the MIAA’s state indoor track championships at the Northeastern University’s Reggie Lewis Center in Boston Saturday. He completed the event in 9:21.00, and will move on to next week’s All-State competition.
Other notable finishes for Westfield included: Tim Dostie (mile/6th/4:30), Nick Jacques (300 meters/11th/37.18), Charlie Newman (300 meters/18th/6.9), and the 4×200 relay team, which ran a season-best 1:36.00).
WRESTLING – WEST SECTIONALS
Sean Donofrio had Westfield’s best finish of the day in Division I as runner-up in the 152-pound weight class, behind only Central’s Richard Viruet.
Other top five finishers for the Bombers included: Chris Galvin (113 pounds, 3rd), Dominic Liquori (195, 4th), Austin Shrewsbury (285, 4th), and Nick McDonnell (120, 5th).
In Division 3, Southwick-Tolland’s Tyler Dittrich led the field of local wrestlers in second place among 132-pounders. Teammate Blake Tetreault (182) was third; Jacob Stathers (113), fourth; and, Brett Bodzinski (285), fifth.
Joe Jones (106), Andrew Goskowicz (160), and Sam Rexer (170) all finished third for Gateway Regional.
BOYS’ HOOPS
Westfield 52, Cathedral 38
Westfield (8-9) rallied from six points down at the end of the first quarter, 14-8, to overtake Cathedral (11-7) Saturday.
“It was a big win – we needed it,” said Westfield coach Bill Daley, whose team needs to win two of its final three games to make the Division I playoffs. “It gives us a chance.”
Connor Sas (18 points) drained six 3-pointers to lead Westfield. Bombers’ Kyle Murphy (13) made three 3s, and D.J. Florek finished with four points, 13 rebounds, and 10 blocked shots.
Westfield next plays at Amherst Monday at 4:30 p.m.
Monson 66, Gateway 46
Calvin Dowers (13 points) and Ryan Fisk (11) led Gateway with double-digits points. Gators’ Mike Arel scored nine.
