WHS girls’ track highlights big local day

WESTFIELD – The Westfield High School girls’ track and field team were three times as good as their opponent(s) Friday.
Westfield picked up three Valley Wheel League victories with wins over Chicopee (96-40), Chicopee Comp (111-25), and Central (119-17) in a quad-meet Friday at Westfield State University.
Taylor White, Ali Morin, Keri Paton, Jenna Rothermel, Morgan Sanders, and Carley Censabella were all triple winners for Westfield.

Collins a triple-winner
BOYS’ TRACK & FIELD
Southwick 106, Cathedral 29

Jon Collins won three events to lead Southwick – the high jump (5-8), 440 meters (59.4) and 200 meters (25.1). Rams’ Nick Peterson (long jump, 19-0; triple jump, 41-5) and Dan Lane (110 hurdles, 17.8; 400 hurdles, 65.8) won two events apiece.
Southwick improved to 2-0.

Bombers sweep Lions

Westfield def. Ludlow, 25-20, 25-19, 25-22

WESTFIELD – Chris Paradis (26 assists), Ivan Zuev (13 digs), John Bucko (9 kills, 5 blocks), John Oleksak (4 aces, 4 digs), and Eric Shilyuk (9 kills, 5 blocks) helped Westfield (6-2 overall, 2-1 league) sweep visiting Ludlow.
“It was a solid effort from us today against a quality opponent,” Westfield coach Tyler Wingate said. “It’s always great to get a league. It was the result of a good week of practice and executing the game plan well.”

Westfield defeats Longmeadow
GIRLS’ TENNIS
Westfield 4, Longmeadow 1

WESTFIELD – Hannah Taylor, Rory Viale, and Nicole Kamal won three very tough matches in singles play, and second doubles pair, Taylor Perry and Logan Baillargeon won 6-1, 6-3 to propel Westfield past Longmeadow in a Whip City matchup Friday.
Taylor defeated Longmeadow’s Erica Paul, 2-6, 7-5, 6-3 at first singles; Viale topped Jen Barnhart, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 at second singles; and, No. 3 player, Kamal, edged Brooke Wistreich 7-6, (8-6), 6-2.

Irzyk homers, propels WHS

WESTFIELD – Westfield’s Matt Irzyk picked up a victory on the mound, and clubbed a home run at the plate. Ashton Kennedy (2-for-3), Matt Bruno (2-3), and Brent Houle (2-5) collected two hits apiece for the Bombers.

Rams trounce Gaels
Southwick-Tolland 17, Holyoke Catholic 0 (5 inn.)

SOUTHWICK – Southwick pitcher Nick Maserelli delivered a superb effort on the mound, and the Rams tore the cover off the ball at the plate.
Maserelli pitched a one-hitter. He struck out nine batters, walked two, and pitched hitless ball all the way up until the fifth inning, allowing a bloop hit.
“(Nick) threw fantastic,” Southwick coach Tim Karetka said. “He dominated. He was overpowering.”
Southwick’s offense was quite powerful as well.
The Rams’ hitting attack was led by Patrick King (2-for-4, 4 RBIs), Bryan Sheil (2-4, 3 RBIs), Jake Goodreau (2-run triple, walk, hit by pitch), Brian Mickalay (2-run base hit), and Travis Porello, who collected his first varsity hit, a double.
“We kind of smacked the ball around a little bit,” Karetka said.
Southwick finished with 12 hits. The Rams next take on St. Mary Monday at Bullens Field at 4 p.m.

Tigers rally at home
Westfield Voc-Tech 8, Smith Voke 4

WESTFIELD – Westfield Voc-Tech rallied from a 4-0 deficit to defeat Smith Voke at Bullens Field.
Voc-Tech cut the lead in half in the bottom of the fourth inning with consecutive singles from Bailey French and Nick Wood, followed by an RBI single from Connor Hebda. In the fifth, Reid Phillips singled to lead off the inning. Tyler French walked. Walter Halluck tripled. Bailey French reached on an error. Nick Wood laced an RBI single. Joey Gaulin followed with an RBI single.
“The Tigers continue to show grit and toughness,” Voc-Tech coach Kyle Dulude said.
Walter Halluck scattered seven hits in a complete game effort on the mound for the Tigers. He recorded 10 strikeouts, walked one batter and hit two.
“It was a very strong performance,” Dulude said of his hurler. “Once again I am very proud of the guys fight and desire to compete.”

Mustangs blank Gators
Monson 5, Gateway 0

Curtis Dowers (double, stolen base), Ethan Gamble (double), and Calvin Dowers (double, 2 walks) had the lone hits for Gateway.

Bombers bounce Blue Devils
BOYS’ LACROSSE
Westfield 11, Northampton 5

NORTHAMPTON – Matt Chlastawa (4 goals, 4 assists) and Sam Scarfo (4 goals, 2 assists) spearheaded the offensive attack for Westfield in a big road win.
Bombers’ Rashaun Rivers (2 goals), Justin Halls (goal), Garrett Fitzgerald (assist), and Luke Chlastawa (assist) also contributed offensively.
Jake Cupak (14 saves) and the entire Westfield defense had a solid second half, holding Northampton to just one goal in final two quarters.
Corey Ward controlled the midfield, winning 12 of 16 faceoffs for the Bombers (7-1).

Saints rally for tie
GIRLS’ LACROSSE
St. Mary 11, Holyoke Catholic 11

CHICOPEE – Andrea Watson had three goals and one assist, including a last-second goal at the whistle to ensure St. Mary of a come-from-behind tie at Nash Park.
Miranda Arena had the assist on the tying goal.
St. Mary’s Lauren Chapdelaine scored four goals, Aisling Smith finished with a hat trick (3), and Jillian Watson tallied a goal.
Carly Woodruff and Karissa Foley combined for eight saves in net. Both played a half, and made four saves apiece.

McCann handcuffs Gators

McCann Tech 27, Gateway 2

Arielle Baillargeon, Sammy Same, and Jordan Cooper (2 walks) had the sole hits for Gateway.
