Wrong answer

WESTFIELD – Some answers are just too hard to believe.
Lt. Eric Hall, commander of the city’s community policing unit, reports he observed a college-aged young man walking on Shepard Street, at 11:17 p.m. Friday, holding what appeared to be a can of beer.
The community policing officers spend a considerable amount of their time enforcing alcohol related ordinances so spotting a young man on the sidewalk with a can of beer in his hand is probably not unusual for Hall but the man’s answer when he was approached was a little hard to believe.
Hall reports that the man said that the beer can he had picked up had been discarded and he picked it up in an effort to remove litter from the sidewalks.
When Hall pointed out that the can of beer was “open, ice cold and full” the young man said that he had found it that way and he picked it up to ensure it did not fall into the hands of children.
A city ordinance violation citation for possession of an open container of alcohol in public was issued.
