WSU baseball sweeps; Mailloux perfect

BUZZARDS BAY – Senior Andrew Medeiros (Acushnet, Mass.) rapped four hits as Westfield State used a pair of comebacks in the late innings to sweep a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader from Massachusetts Maritime Monday by scores of 6-5 and 4-3.
The visiting Owls (12-13, 5-3 MASCAC) overcame an early 2-0 deficit to take a 3-2 fourth inning lead in the opener, as freshman D.J. Bishop (Dartmouth, Mass.) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and fellow freshman Tyler Adams (West Barnstable, Mass.) followed with a sacrifice fly.
Westfield State extended that margin to 4-2 in the fifth on an RBI single off the bat of sophomore Pat McWilliams (Duxbury, Mass.).
The host Buccaneers (7-13, 3-5 MASCAC) evened matters in the bottom of the frame when freshman Michael Lenane (Dorchester, Mass.) singled and scored on a triple by senior Tyler Genereux (Duxbury, Mass.), who then came across with the tying run on a sacrifice fly by junior Ben Maher (Plymouth, Mass.).
Massachusetts Maritime took a 5-4 advantage with two outs in the sixth on a run-scoring infield single by sophomore Bobby Rosano (North Reading, Mass.).
Medeiros led off the seventh with a double and scored the tying run on an RBI triple by senior Kevin Greene (Worcester, Mass.), who came across with what proved to be the winning tally on a suicide squeeze by junior Kyle Colesanti (Mount Kisco, N.Y.).
The hosts had a chance to force extra innings in the bottom half of the frame, but Lenane was stranded at third to end the contest.
Medeiros and McWilliams each had two of Westfield State’s nine hits in the opening triumph. Senior Curt Everett (Lexington, Mass.) earned the victory on the mound for the Owls with two scoreless innings in relief of junior Mike Sullivan (East Sandwich, Mass.), who allowed four earned runs and fanned two over the first five frames.

Massachusetts Maritime took a 1-0 second inning lead in the nightcap on an RBI groundout by junior Matt Pelletier (Bradford, Mass.), and both teams plated tallies in the third on errors.
Westfield State took the lead for good with two runs in the fifth on sacrifice flies by Adams and Greene. Medeiros provided the Owls with a key run in the seventh on an RBI single, as the Buccaneers crept back to within one on Maher’s run-scoring single in the bottom of the inning.
