WESTFIELD – Payback is a … Saint!
The St. Mary High School boys’ soccer team avenged last season’s 3-0 loss to McCann Tech with a thrilling 2-1 win Monday at Westfield Middle School North Field.
Joey Collins scored the game-winner on a pass from Seamus Butler to erase the painful memories of a year ago. Zac Girard collected the first score for St. Mary, thanks to a pass from Nick Garde.
“It was definitely a good win for us,” St. Mary coach Andrew Martin said. “I was definitely impressed with our energy and intensity that we came out and played with. Our guys played hard the whole game.”
St. Mary goalie Colin Blake was sensational in goal, ensuring Monday’s victory with 18 saves.
Girard was solid from the striker position, and Alex Sheltra shut down McCann’s top offensive threat. St. Mary won the majority of 50/50 balls.
“Our defense did an outstanding job,” Martin said. “It was an overall team effort.”
