CHARLEMONT – The St. Mary’s ski team had a strong day at the MIAA State Championship Ski Race Tuesday at Berkshire East. Five Saints – senior captain Matt Masciadrelli, Jack Masciadrelli, Hayden Lussier, Collin Freeman and Chloe Lussier – represented their school proudly with strong runs in the slalom and Giant Slalom competitions.
“We really had some great skiing by the team today,” St. Mary ski coach Andy Lussier said. “All of our athletes really skied strong and pushed hard especially with the challenging slalom course sets. The field was pretty deep with over 150 girls and 150 boys and our Saints managed to get a few into to the top 10.”
Matthew Masciadrelli set the pace, sking into second place in the GS with a time of 37.94.
“He really attacked the GS and skied the steeps with an aggressive line,” coach Lussier said of his top skier. “He is definitely one of the most consistent skiers in that discipline. It’s his thing.”
Jack Masciadrelli skied into seventh in the slalom with some smart tactics, and good skiing as well.
“He really paid attention in our inspection and took it into his run,” coach Lussier said of Jack. “He skied clean and smooth through the pitch and really attacked the top of the course.”
Other medalists included Westfield girls’ skier Grace O’Connor (8th place GS finish; 42.22) and boys’ skier Jacob Stephens (10th place slalom finish).
